Tokai and Table Mountain

South Africa’s mother city is know for many things and is one of the most famous places in the world, but for mountain bikers it holds a unique appeal with some amazing routes and trail right on its doorstep, as well as some other interesting and diverse options if you are willing to travel a bit.

On this trip we decided to focus closer to our Cape Sun base in the city bowl and ride Table Mountain’s legal trails, and then head over the hill in our kit swallowing Peugeot 5008 to Tokai the next day.

Just being in Cape Town is a cool experience and with the prospect of two great rides, we were super excited to hit the trails.

Test Crew Wisdom

Weather can be really unpredictable in Cape Town so be sure to pack a windbreaker, just in case it gets really cold. When we started on Table Mountain it was freezing and 2 hours later, the sun was out and we were chilling at Camps Bay! If things are bad on one side of the mountain, remember they are probably ok on the other so plan your rides accordingly.

  • Table Mountain is a unique place to ride
  • Tokai has some great variety with something for everyone
  • Camps Bay and the Muizenburg beaches are close for after ride R&R.
  • Cheap at R10 for Tokai and free on TM.

  • Trails at Tokai can be confusing for out-of-towners
  • No trail marking on Table Mountain-not sure what is legal and what’s not?
  • Single track has suffered erosion from huge amount of traffic.
  • Not much in the way of facilities.
  • I rode through dog pooh on TM. Not cool people, clean up after your mutts.
