In the world of mountain bike trail centres in SA, Giba Gorge would certainly be considered one of the pioneers, the early adopters, the trailblazers, so to say. They were not the first, but they were the ones who really took this bikepark thing seriously and in our opinion and according to the scorecard, they are one of the best, if not the best, bikepark in South Africa.
We found the riding to be enjoyable, awesome and fun and the world-class facilities make this a must ride, for all mountain bikers. When we say world class we mean it too. Giba offers more in terms of facilities than many of the most famous Welsh and Scottish bikeparks such as Cwm Carn, Innerleithen and Coed Llandegla, for example. To put this world-class moniker into perspective, your R50 entry fee gets you safe parking, a cyclelab store, great coffee shop, awesome décor shop that your wife/ girlfriend/ mother-in-law will love, serious BMX track, skills area, dirt jumps, pump track, bike wash, toilets, showers, kids play area, huge picnic area, medical facilities, and , and , and…….plus we haven’t even turned a crank in anger yet!
When it comes to riding, Giba flows amazingly well. The trails are generally very well made so that means they ride well and are standing the test of time against a bikeparks worst enemy, rain water, and in KZN there is plenty of that.
- Drop your saddle if you want to play - Get emergency contact numbers before you start your ride - Slow your rear rebound down if you are going to do jumps - Build up slowly when attempting jumps or drop offs - Warm up in play park - Never ride an obstacle unsighted
